In a world of podcasts, newsletters, social media and constant digital content, it would be easy to assume that publishing a book has lost some of its power.

The opposite is actually true.

For designers, creatives, entrepreneurs and industry experts, a published book remains one of the most effective ways to build authority, generate media coverage, attract speaking opportunities and create long-term value beyond a core business.

At Brand Shout, we help clients turn expertise, creative work and public profile into commercial opportunities. One recent example is Everyday Joy, the new book from Australian interior designer Kate Nixon, published by Hardie Grant Books and released this year.

While readers see the finished book on the shelf, the real work begins much earlier. Before there is a publisher, a manuscript or a launch event, there needs to be a strong idea with a clear audience and commercial reason to exist.

The Opportunity Before The Book

When Brand Shout first began discussing the possibility of a book with Kate Nixon, there was no manuscript, no publisher and no defined publishing pathway.

BUT.... there was an idea.

Kate had spent years building a respected career across interior design, retail, textiles and editorial publishing. As a former Houses Editor of Australian House & Garden, she brought design expertise, media credibility and a distinctive lifestyle point of view.

The opportunity was clear, but it needed structure.

Brand Shout was involved from the very beginning, helping Kate curate, workshop and shape the idea that would eventually become Everyday Joy. Before the project could be taken to publishers, the concept needed to be developed, the audience identified and the market opportunity assessed.

Brand Shout was not simply brought in to find a publisher. We helped turn an early idea into a polished publishing proposition with clear commercial potential.

Turning From Idea To Publishing Deal

A book proposal is not just a description of content. It is a commercial pitch.

Publishers need to understand who will buy the book, why it stands apart from other titles and how the author’s profile can support its success in the market.

For Kate Nixon, the opportunity sat at the intersection of interiors, entertaining, food, lifestyle and professional expertise. It was not about creating a conventional interiors book. It was about translating Kate’s world, experience and design philosophy into a publication with broader audience appeal.

Brand Shout helped develop the concept to pitch stage, then negotiated and secured an exclusive publishing agreement with Hardie Grant Books.

The agreement included international distribution, giving the book reach beyond Australia and positioning it for a wider design and lifestyle audience.

For many creative professionals, this is the part of the process that feels hardest to access. Knowing how to shape the idea, approach the right publishing partner and negotiate the opportunity requires experience, relationships and a clear commercial lens.

From Contract To Finished Book

Securing a book deal is only one part of the process - Brand Shout continued to assist as liaison between the publishing team and Kate Nixon, helping support communication, clarity and momentum as the book moved through development, production and release.

Almost three years after the first conversation, Everyday Joy arrived on shelves in time for Mother’s Day - as planned.

A book of this kind does not happen by accident. It is built through strategy, positioning, negotiation and sustained execution.

The launch of Everyday Joy also demonstrated how a book can become more than a publication.

In Sydney, a media lunch was held at Chiswick with guests including Edwina Bartholomew, Kirstie Clements and Matt Moran. This was followed by a cocktail reception at the Kate Nixon store hosted by Belle magazine editor Tanya Buchanan.

Later that month, Kate travelled to Texas during Texas Design Week for book events and signings. She appeared on a panel discussion at the En Gold showroom, answered questions from guests and signed copies of Everyday Joy. She also visited Supply Showroom in Austin, Kate’s wallpaper and linen collection showroom partner, where an event was held in her honour.

On return to Australia, Kate appeared on Sunrise on Channel 7 in promotion of the book, cooking one of the recipes from the publication for hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington.

These moments helped extend the book beyond retail and into media, events and international design communities.

That is where a book deal becomes a platform.

Why Publishing Matters For Business Growth

For designers, architects, stylists, chefs, founders and industry experts, a book can become one of the most powerful assets a brand can create.

It can formalise expertise, generate press, support speaking opportunities and introduce a business to new audiences. It can also open the door to partnerships, licensing opportunities, retail activations and international exposure.

At Brand Shout, we see publishing as part of a broader commercial strategy. Much like licensing, product collaboration and brand development, the right book can help a business grow beyond its existing channels.

It is not just about becoming an author.

It is about understanding how a body of work, a point of view or a professional reputation can become something larger.

How Brand Shout Helps Bring Books To Market

While many people know Brand Shout for licensing, partnerships and brand development, publishing has become an increasingly important part of our work.

We help clients develop and refine book concepts, assess market opportunities, prepare publishing proposals, identify suitable publishers, negotiate publishing agreements, manage stakeholder communication and support launch activity.

Founder Owen Lynch has been integral in bringing a number of books in the design and lifestyle space to market since 2015, with further client publications already earmarked for 2028 and beyond.

The process developed with Kate Nixon is one Brand Shout has since replicated for other clients.

For creative professionals, entrepreneurs and industry experts in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and across Australia, publishing can be a powerful way to elevate profile and create new commercial opportunities.

If you have expertise, an idea, a body of work or a story that could become a book, the first step is rarely writing the manuscript.

It is understanding the opportunity.

Every published book begins with an idea.

The right strategy can help turn it into something much bigger.
